Google Maps

Places, directions, reviews

The default for opening hours, reviews and “near me” searches, with Street View for checking a neighbourhood before booking. Review scores skew positive on popular tourist areas.

OpenStreetMap

The free crowdsourced world map

Open data with trail, cycle and address detail that commercial maps often miss. Better for hiking routes and for editing what you find wrong.

TripAdvisor

Hotel & restaurant reviews

Hotel, restaurant and attraction reviews at scale, with forum threads that are often more useful than the rankings. Check review dates — a 2019 review describes a different property.

Booking.com

Stays worldwide

Wide accommodation coverage with free-cancellation filters and a map view. Compare the total with taxes before booking; the headline rate usually excludes them.

Rome2Rio

Door-to-door trip planning

Multi-modal route planning that compares flying, rail, bus and driving with time and cost. The right first step before booking any leg of a multi-city trip.

About the Maps & Travel channel

Travel search is three questions wearing one coat: where is this place, what will it cost to stay there, and how do I get from A to B. Maps answer the first, booking sites the second, route planners the third — and each has a different idea of what “near” and “cheap” mean.

Search the place name once and open the map plus one booking site. Read reviews for the specific room type or route, not the property average, and check whether the “free cancellation” deadline is in local time. For anything involving more than one mode of transport, use a route planner before you book the first leg — the cheapest flight is often the most expensive itinerary.

Maps & Travel search — frequently asked questions

Which map should I use for hiking or cycling?

OpenStreetMap, ideally through a renderer that shows trails and surface type. Commercial maps deprioritise footpaths and often lack seasonal closures.

How do I compare hotel prices honestly?

Compare the total including taxes and fees, for the same room type and cancellation policy. A cheaper nightly rate with no free cancellation is a different product.

Are review scores reliable?

Directionally: a 4.6 with 2,000 reviews tells you something. Read the recent 2-star and 3-star reviews instead — they describe the failure modes, which is what you actually need to know.

How do I plan a route across several cities?

Start with Rome2Rio to see the realistic options and durations, then book each leg on the operator’s own site. Compare the total travel time, not just the price.
